Which brand of tripod to buy.

The tripod is very resistant to vibrations. Testing has shown that Benro's TravelAngelII reflects strong vibrations and eliminates noise that can cause image blur during shooting.

For over 25 years, Manfrotto has been manufacturing quality and affordable camera tripods. One such model is the Manfrotto BeFree MKBFRA4-BH travel tripod. The model's aluminum construction is lightweight and durable, making it a great option for photographers with an active lifestyle.

The legs of the tripod are marked with special sections showing how and in what direction the legs can turn. The MKBFRA4-BH is equipped with a compact head with a diameter of only 26mm. It has a handle that allows you to shoot panoramas.

The tripod is an excellent combination of price and quality. Manfrotto BeFree MKBFRA4-BH is reliable and stable, able to withstand loads and vibrations and maintain the clarity of the frame. It is resistant to adverse temperature conditions. The only drawback that the craftsmen can notice is the lack of a hook on the central column for attaching additional weight.

Tripods are required to fix the camera. They are indispensable when shooting at slow shutter speeds, when using powerful zoom lenses and allow the photographer to shoot himself in the company of friends. The world of tripods and monopods is diverse. The rating of the best tripods for cameras and camcorders will help you not to get lost in it and make the right choice. We have selected the best options for monopods and tripods (floor and desktop), based on reviews and reviews from professionals. Our rating will help you decide which tripod is the best in a particular category.

The best floor tripods - tripods for cameras and camcorders

A tripod is a versatile and popular tripod design. When searching, pay attention to the reliability, maximum load and height of the model. Enthusiasts will appreciate additional functionality: the ability to flip the center shaft, replace the tripod head and the presence of a removable platform. Please note that in addition to 3D heads, ball heads are becoming widespread. They allow you to quickly change the shooting point without tedious adjustment along the axes. According to the manufacturers, most tripods will be suitable for cameras and camcorders, but videographers will need to be vigilant. Not all tripods have a smooth head movement without jerks.

4 Falcon Eyes Travel Line 3600

The lowest price in the category
Country: China
Average price: 1,560 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

A tripod that does not have a large set of functions, but will please with the price and simplicity of design. He weighs only 1.34 kg. The device is light and durable, so it is suitable for outdoor filming enthusiasts. The height at which the camera will be located: from 61 to 170 cm. The lifting mechanism and three sliding sections allow you to smoothly change the height of the tripod. The tripod has a built-in level for the correct installation of the camera in a horizontal position.

You can hang a bag for a video camera on the bar - there is a separate hook for this. The tripod can support a camera weighing 4kg, which is quite an impressive weight, so don't be afraid that the tripod will break. Comes with a 3D head for pointing the camera. It rotates regardless of the position of the camera, capable of taking panoramic shots. A case is also included with the device. A separate advantage of the model is the price. It is quite low, but the quality of the model is optimal. For those who are just starting to master shooting and do not want to overpay, this tripod is what you need.

3 Jmary KP-2264

Best Max Height
Country: China
Average price: 3 240 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Pretty good tripod for amateurs. The legs of this tripod consist of three sections and end with rubber tips from which spikes protrude. Therefore, you can stably install the model on any surface - slippery, loose, uneven, and so on. A tripod can hold equipment weighing up to 4 kilograms, so it allows you to safely use even professional cameras and good video cameras with it.

When folded, the tripod is 57 centimeters long and weighs almost 1.5 kilograms, which is not very convenient. Despite the weight, the tripod feels flimsy and not very stable, so it's best not to overload it. The maximum installation height of the camera is 1.76 meters. Although in the reviews, some buyers write that you can achieve a greater length if you try. For stability, you can hang a bag or additional weight from a special hook. It is convenient that the tripod has a built-in level by which you can align the camera. Comes with a convenient carrying case.

2 Benro T-600EX

Simple design (two clips)
Country: China
Average price: 2,100 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Silver takes Chinese tripod with excellent performance. It is quite stable and made simply - it has a minimum of moving parts. Mounts - two clips that are easy to open and close. Therefore, it is convenient for on-site assembly and disassembly, and the minimum number of “weak points” makes the structure more stable. You can raise the camera to a maximum of 146 centimeters on this tripod. At the same time, it folds up to 57 centimeters and weighs 1.46 kilograms.

It can hold equipment weighing up to 3 kilograms. At the same time, it has a 3D head, which allows you to shoot at any angle without unnecessary rearrangements of the camera and tripod. There is a convenient lifting mechanism. I'm not happy that the handle is located under the left hand, and some buyers in the reviews indicated that it was inconvenient for them. But the movement of the head is quite smooth compared to other models of this price category. So you can call a tripod quite a good purchase for amateurs. The kit comes with a cover.

The choice of tripod depends on the type of camera and purpose of use. Amateurs can focus on the cost of models, and professionals will have to delve into every detail.

The parameter is crucial for owners of photographic equipment with heavy zoom lenses. The best choice would be to buy a tripod with a margin of safety, since manufacturers sin by overestimating the maximum load.

Design reliability. Thin plastic connections shorten the life of the purchase. But if a tripod for a camera or a video camera is rarely required, you can save on it.

Shooting height. Height is important when buying a tripod or floor standing monopod. Low tripods limit the photographer in choosing a favorable angle, they are uncomfortable for tall people.

Compactness. The weight of the tripod and its dimensions when folded affect the convenience during transportation and the reliability of fixation. As a rule, the lighter and more compact the model, the less stable it is.

Removable platform. Useful in situations where you need to quickly remove the camera from a tripod. The photographer in any situation remains mobile and does not lose important minutes for unscrewing photographic equipment.

head type. The two main types of tripod heads for cameras are 3D and ball heads. 3D hold equipment tightly, but require adjustment and fixation on each axis. The ball head gives the best efficiency, but is not so reliable. For a camcorder, a video head is preferable, providing a smooth ride when turning. Professionals prefer tripods with removable heads: they can be changed in case of breakage or depending on the shooting conditions.

1 HAMA Star-63 (04163)

Country: Germany
Average price: 1,739 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

A versatile, lightweight tripod that can handle a wide range of tasks. It is suitable for budget segment camera and professional camera. The bases of the legs have an enviable stability. In windy weather, a special hook is useful, on which the load is suspended. Comfortable height adjustment will appeal to photographers of all sizes. The height of the tripod is adjustable from 66 to 166 centimeters, which is enough for most tasks. Comes with a nice carrying case.

The budget price does not give the right to count on the high quality of plastic, but consumer complaints about the fragility of the design sound infrequently. Of the justified claims: the lack of a smooth ride along the axes, which is necessary for video cameras.

In general, for its price, the HAMA Star-63 is the best tripod that holds its own in the ratings.

The best table tripods - tripods

Desktop tripods for the camera will come in handy when traveling and at home. They will replace stacks of books and other ridiculous structures that amateur photographers use to fix equipment. Mini tripods do not take up much space, but they help to calmly frame the frame and hold the camera securely.

4 HAMA Mini Ball L (04064)

The lightest in the category
Country: Germany
Average price: 480 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

The first from the end in the ranking of table tripods was this model with telescopic two-section legs and a fairly decent length. A tripod allows you to use cameras and video cameras, but not too heavy - otherwise the supports will begin to fold. It is possible to raise the equipment to a height of up to 21 centimeters. The minimum length is 14 centimeters. At the same time, the tripod is very light - only 110 grams. Therefore, it is convenient to carry it even with a large amount of equipment - the extra weight is almost invisible.

I'm glad that the kit comes with a ball head for shooting - for such a price it's just a great solution. The feet are rubber-tipped so they don't move when you install the camera and don't slide on smooth surfaces. By the way, this is a very cheap tripod, which somewhat affects the quality - the model is suitable for not too demanding amateurs.

3 Cullmann Magnesit Copter

Excellent stability
Country: Germany
Average price: 2,550 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Sleek, high quality, comfortable. These three words can describe this table tripod, which can withstand a device weighing up to 4 kilograms. Allows you to install the camera at a minimum height of 10 centimeters. When folded, it reaches 16 centimeters and weighs only 180 grams, so it will be discreetly carried in a backpack or purse.

The tripod is made in a laconic design - there is nothing superfluous on it, only elements that perform certain functions. The legs of the model are made of fairly strong aluminum alloy. I'm not happy that the head is not included in the kit - it will have to be purchased separately. But they can be quickly changed and used with a tripod even with simple video cameras, not to mention SLR cameras. In the reviews, buyers note that the stability of the model is excellent, and the equipment does not hang on it.

2 Velbon EX-Mini

The most versatile table tripod
Country: China
Average price: 1,690 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Externally, a reliable tripod for video cameras and cameras resembles classic tripods. The model has a central column, adjustable braces-amplifiers and two-section legs. A well-thought-out design meets high requirements, but comes at the expense of weight. Not everyone will decide to take an extra pound on vacation, but for home photo experiments, this is the best option. With the help of Velbon EX-Mini, the camera can be installed in any position, a tripod is convenient for macro photography. The minimum height is only 19 centimeters. Pleased with the maximum length for work - 41.7 centimeters, so you can use it as a floor for "low" angles.

The 2D head, at first glance, seems inconvenient, but among photographers there are fans of this particular camera position control system. Having aligned the horizontal once, the photographer can only adjust the position vertically.

A stable tripod is designed for semi-professional and amateur cameras, but there has been confusion about the weight that can be held. Most online resources indicate 2.5 kilograms, and on the box - 1.5.

1 Manfrotto PIXI Mini

The best ratio of price and quality. The best adjustment system
Country: China
Average price: 2,200 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Lightweight, compact, durable and stylish, this model ranks first in the ranking of the best tabletop tripods. From the use of the tripod, buyers have only positive emotions. It allows you to work with the camera at a height of 13.5 centimeters. Its maximum length when folded is 18.5 centimeters. Rounded legs allow you to use the model also as a handle for the camera when shooting "on hand".

The tripod weighs only 200 grams, but confidently withstands loads up to 1 kilogram. And this is not just a marketing ploy: Manfrotto PIXI Mini is suitable even for SLR cameras with compact lenses. It securely fixes the camera, stability is added by rubber pads of supports. Even a child will understand the clear adjustment system: to change the position, you only need to press one button.

But lovers of macro photography will not appreciate the purchase: it is impossible to lower the camera much vertically.

The best tripods - monopods

Monopods are familiar to the modern consumer as a selfie stick, but their practical application is much wider. Floor monopods for cameras and camcorders are widely used by professionals. Single leg tripods are able to give a secure foothold without taking up much space around the operator. Such a "magic wand" is useful in the crowd and will help the photographer to reach hard-to-reach shooting points.

4 Sony VCT-STG1

Has a carabiner for carrying on a belt
Country: Japan
Average price: 3550 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.5

Desktop and manual tripod for video cameras, the shooting height of which varies from 23 to 93 cm. It is used as a selfie stick or placed on three extendable legs directly on the table. The camera is securely fixed with a wheel. The control panel is inserted into the adapter, which is then placed into the clamps on the monopod. The whole structure is firmly fixed: nothing will loosen in the process.

The camera on the monopod can be rotated 180 degrees and take pictures of yourself, those around you, and take panoramic shots. The video is displayed on the monitor of the remote control, which is convenient for remote filming. The monopod is very compact, fits in any bag. Its weight is only 0.16 kg - it is easy to hold in your hand, it will not get tired. You can take it with you on trips and public events - the gadget will not be a problem and will not interfere. The fact that it is desktop makes it convenient for recording while working at a desk or, for example, when shooting certain shots.

3 Manfrotto MMCOMPACTADV

The best ratio of price and quality
Country: Italy
Average price: 2490 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

The floor tripod is designed for SLR and digital cameras with standard lenses up to 200mm. Supports device weight up to 3 kg. You can shoot from a height of up to 155 cm, or lower it to 41.5 cm. In total, the model has five height sections. Thick, tightly interconnected rods make the monopod stable. The handle is rubberized - the palm will not slip off. With the help of a wheel, the camera is quickly and securely fixed in any conditions. There is a wrist strap for extra support of the camera tripod.

The model is inexpensive, but has all the necessary qualities of a really good monopod: easy to use, lightweight, mobile and versatile. Allows you to shoot in any cramped conditions. Suitable for travel and work at various events, concerts, events and more. The model will please both beginners and professionals. The quality is confirmed by positive reviews and recommendations from satisfied customers.

2 GoPro AFAEM-001

The most multifunctional
Country: USA
Average price: 3850 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Multifunctional monopod for GoPro camcorders with multifunctional 3-Way Mount. Shooting height: from 19 to 50.8 cm. It has three sections. Compact, so it's easy to take with you on any trip. Easily turns into a short or elongated monopod or even a tripod. The latter function is possible thanks to a mini tripod hidden inside the handle, which allows you to put the accessory on a table or the ground. It can be used alone or attached to a monopod. It is also ideal for filming various tricks on snowboarding, skateboarding and other sports.

The device allows you to make a video from the first person, accompanying shooting, static frames, selfies, etc. Another advantage is that it is not afraid of water. Fits all GoPro cameras. All these qualities make the monopod versatile and multifunctional. The product has many positive reviews from satisfied customers. You can safely go on a trip with it - all the most exciting moments will be filmed. However, keep in mind that it was conceived for light action cameras, so heavy models will not withstand.

1 Rekam RM-120

Best price
Country: USA
Average price: 1,460 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Budget monopod will interest beginners and professionals. A height of 171 centimeters is enough for a photographer of any height and when shooting from hard-to-reach angles. The tripod itself weighs 375 grams, while supporting 3 kg cameras. In the reviews, buyers note the highest speed of assembly and start of work, which can be important when shooting events or incidents.

The head is non-rotatable, so it is not suitable for selfies. But some photographers are looking for just such an option: due to the simplicity of the design, the camera is quickly installed on the site.

The tripod does not have a convenient folding foot under the leg, the dimensions are not compact, the plastic does not inspire confidence. But if you eliminate the shortcomings, the model will cost more. The Rekam RM-120 is the best in its price category and holds its own in the camera tripod rating.

The best tripods with the original design

Models with an original design fill in the gaps of classic tripods. A non-standard approach can attract attention. But the main thing is not this. It is important that such tripods are able to solve unusual tasks in complicated conditions. They can be anything: desktop, floor, hanging and so on.

3 ERA ECP-0070

Attaches anywhere
Country: China
Average price: 790 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.5

This is a universal desktop tripod that can work simultaneously in tripod and clamp mode. It easily attaches to any ledge suitable for clamping, so it's easy to screw the model anywhere. Supports a photo or video camera weighing up to 0.8 kilograms. At the same time, it can provide a shooting height of 14 centimeters. The head rests on hinges, so that the tripod allows you to place the camera at any angle relative to yourself.

The clamp holds the equipment quite tightly in the desired position, if it is not overloaded. In the reviews, customers note that the product is relatively good, but only for amateur filming. The disadvantage is not the highest quality materials. Because of the ridiculous price, manufacturers decided to save money, so you should not count on the fact that a plastic tripod can withstand serious loads. In addition, the head will have to be purchased separately.

2 Rekam M-50

Best price
Country: USA
Average price: 610 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

The design resembles rather not a tripod, but a stand for the camera. Rekam M-50 is so compact that when folded it will fit in the pocket of a man's shirt or jeans. But wearing it in trousers is risky because of the untrustworthy design. According to customer reviews, the rubber pads on the legs fall off already when unpacking the goods.

There is no height adjustment, everything will have to be removed from the level of 16 centimeters. You can only change the angle along the vertical axis. The manufacturer indicates a load of up to 1 kilogram, but it does not hold heavy DSLRs well.

The design of the tripod allows you to shoot at a height of 10 to 16 centimeters. But only by changing the position of the camera vertically - the tripod itself has no adjustment. The budget model will be the best for owners of compact cameras to occasionally take pictures with their families.

1 Miggo Splat MW SP-3N1 BL 50

The smallest of the original
Country: China
Average price: 2790 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.9

This unusual model with flexible legs becomes the leader of our rating. This tripod can be mounted on almost any surface and in any position. A tree branch, a table, a steering wheel of a car, and in general everything that is enough for imagination will do. Legs bend at any angle: the camera can look down, up, straight - anywhere. Suitable for smartphones, GoPro cameras and action cameras, as well as for other lightweight models - three types of mounts are included.

The tripod is made of stainless steel, so it is very durable. It is also lightweight - it weighs only 75 g. The gadget practically does not take up space - it will even fit into a pocket or a ladies' clutch. The tripod is able to support a small camera or a smartphone weighing up to 500 grams: you should not count on it to hold large SLR cameras. The gadget is reliable and easy to manage. Plus a holder of an unusual shape, which will appeal to all lovers of interesting gizmos. To complete the kit, you should buy a tripod head.

Yes, this is a tripod photo review again. Who cares, listen)) I think this review will come in handy for someone.
It so happened that the Fotopro X4i-e photo tripod fell into my hands, in theory it is an analogue of the previously reviewed Sirui T-005, but there are some differences.

Main characteristics:
Photo tripod Fotopro X4i-E with ball head FPH-42Q (KIT):
Maximum load: 5kg
Weight: 1.1kg
Folded Length: 31.5cm
Minimum working height: 31cm
Maximum working height: 106/121/138cm depending on the height of the central column
Number of sections: 5
Material: aluminum-magnesium alloy

At its core, the X4 is a smaller version of the Fotopro C5i tripod.

As you can see, C5 is already a different class of tripods (larger, heavier, higher). And the competitor is Sirui T-005
But even though the tripods are almost the same in size and weight, there are interesting details and differences. For example, T-005 has more foam rubber on its legs.
Putting and twisting the tripods, at the beginning I could not understand how the T-005 differs, and only when I was going to pack the tripods into cases I realized -

T-005 is smaller in "diameter" when folded. Maybe it's not so noticeable in the photo, but it's true. It is more elegant when folded. Perhaps the reason for this is that the X4's leg latches stick out and the central "triangle" is larger.

The next moment is weight. X4 weighs 1200 grams. But Sirui weighs almost 100 grams less.

Now consider the construction of the tripod, it is basically identical to the C5, so the photo will be smaller.
The tripod is bright - orange, there are other colors.
Legs are 5 sectional, leg clamps are circular, the tips of the legs are rubber, non-removable. Inside each section there are 3 gaskets that do not allow dirt to penetrate inside.

1/4 turn is enough to tighten the leg lock. Locks have greased aluminum threads.
Leg tilt mechanism 3-position with spring-loaded clamps. The central node, according to the manufacturer, is made of magnesium alloy and not aluminum.

Each leg can be deflected independently of the others.

A closer look here shows that the photopro uses ordinary spacers and not brass ones like Sirui. So far, this does not affect the smoothness of work, but we will see later.
Knots of fastening of legs on screws with heads under an asterisk (a key in a set).

The main difference from the T-005 is the design of the central column - there are both pluses and minuses.
The column is removable, it can be installed with a tripod head down. It has a hook to give the tripod better stability by hanging a load. The hook is spring-loaded and so that it interferes minimally, it can be oriented so that it falls into the slots on the base.

It should be noted that the column is 2-section and can be raised or lowered (there is a lock on the central part of the tripod)

The advantage of this design compared to the T-005 is the speed of working with the column (it is optimal to shoot with the column lowered), the ability to turn it head down. Cons - 2 extra locks on the column (2nd section and clamp on the base) which reduces rigidity. Central lock - the ring clamp has 3 protruding edges, and they protrude so much that if you tighten the lock strongly, they rest against your leg when you fold the tripod (shown in the video).

Due to this design of the central column, the minimum shooting height is 31.5 cm (on a flat floor, with the column lowered). True, the central column can be installed with a tripod head down. The design of the X4 is better on the one hand that in nature you don’t need to unwind anything extra to reduce the height of the central column compared to the T-005, which means there is less chance of dirt getting in.

The tripod head comes with a ball-type head with a ball diameter of 26mm. There are 2 handles - one for fixing the rotation along the horizon, and the second for blocking the ball.
It is interesting that the ball heads of the photopro are made under the control of the left hand - with your right hand you hold the camera, leading the subject and turn the lock with your left (the handle is on the left side of the head, and the slot for vertical shooting is in front). The ball lock handle has a protrusion on the handle that facilitates its grip, if you pull this handle, you can change its position - set it as convenient, the handle is spring-loaded). I did not notice the tripod head mounting thread 3/8 "adapter to 1/4" . There is a lock screw - so that the tripod head does not start to unwind (the 2nd hexagon in the kit is just for this screw).

The ball lock handle does not have a stopper and can be fully unscrewed. The T-005 has a limiter, and the free play from the free to the clamped position is only half a turn).
There is a bubble level on the pad lock handle. The handle has a lock and cannot be unscrewed completely.
The contact pad is small with a screw that has an eyelet for quick installation, and 2 stop screws at the bottom (limit screws so that the pad does not slip out of the clamp when the screw is not fully tightened).
Contact pads X4 and C5 are completely interchangeable. Platform T-005 can also be installed on a photopro. Only the X4 platform will not fit on the T-005 due to the limiter screws on it, but they can be unscrewed.

The limiter screws fall from the slot in the head and do not allow the platform to slip out if the fixing screw is not tightened enough.
The height of the tripod repeats T-005
Unfolded - immediately from the folded position

With lowered or removed center section

And various options for maximum height

Close-up details.
Tripod heads - I liked the T-005 more, although they are very similar

Somehow I saw pictures of the X4 on the Internet that are completely identical in design to the T-005, but I don’t know what it was - an early version or some kind of copy. Now X4 and T-005 are two very similar models. Of course they have a difference, but in order to notice it, you need to keep tripods nearby and try to find it.
X4 is a high-quality compact tripod (32 cm when folded), with a low weight (about 1200 grams). Its main feature compared to the T-005 is the height-adjustable central column (in the T-005 it is simply removable).
Personally, for myself, I would leave Sirui T-005 - it somehow fits better (softer move out of the box), a bit more compact and lighter (100 grams lighter)), and I liked his tripod head more.

A tripod will probably not be the first priority on the list of equipment that you will buy. But if you are seriously engaged in photo or video shooting, you will move on to buying it pretty quickly.

Because it’s good to take a picture in the evening or at night, a high-quality panorama without a tripod will not work.

If it came to buying a tripod, then you already have a camera or camcorder. And as a plus, photo lenses, filters, flash or on-camera light. That is, a bunch of electro-optical equipment with a considerable total weight.

And you have to carry it all yourself.

Hence the first characteristic tripod should be light.

And if you go to a decent photo store, you can find a lot of tripods standing in the corner. We take the lightest and most airy. Is that happiness?

And if you try to deploy its joints, put it on the floor and, pressing a little from above, shake it?

Why do we need a tripod that will bend and swing like a fishing rod under the weight of equipment?

We get the second characteristic - the tripod must be rigid.

A person who “ate a dog” on weight reduction will remember the word “carbon” or carbon fiber, and he will be right. Many companies use carbon fiber tubes in the manufacture of tripods. This material allows you to make light and very rigid tripods, which have the only problem - the price.

You have to forget about tripods for $100. No, many people buy something like this as their first tripod. And they even use it. Once or twice. Because there is not much sense from such a tripod.

If in the case of photo tripods the cost of even a very good and very expensive model rarely exceeds $ 1000, then with video tripods everything is much worse. Both in terms of price and in terms of their weight. Therefore, if a minibus with equipment is not following you, you have to forget about normal video tripods. And shoot video with a tripod. But with a video head. More on this later.

Reduce weight without sacrificing rigidity.

Not that CFRP is the only option for weight reduction. There is also aluminum and its alloys, there is basalt. But they are heavier. Percent that way by 30-40.

Perhaps the number one brand in the field of quality tripods is the Italian Gitzo. Very good tripods for very significant money. If you can afford them, take them, you won't regret it. For example, models from the Mountainer or Traveler series with its particularly compact folding method will serve you for many years.

But do not forget that a tripod is selected not only by its own weight and the maximum weight of the camera with a lens, but also by the maximum focal length of the lens. The larger it is, the more rigid the tripod must be. So, for a SLR camera with a 200mm lens with a “full height” tripod, the manufacturer recommends the GT2541L tripod, for which the maximum weight that can be mounted on it is up to 12 kilograms!

In my subjective opinion, the optimum for travel tripod models lies somewhere in the Gitzo GT1541 - GT2540 area.

If the tripod is going to be used more for video filming, it will be good if its central column or head attachment to the tripod has the ability to tilt (leveling) 10-15 degrees in all directions. This makes it easier to align the camera to the horizon.

One point about using a tripod.

If you want maximum rigidity, you should not push the central column. It, at its maximum extension, greatly reduces this rigidity.

To solve this problem, Kirk introduces a replacement center column with an insert (FP-100, FP-200). Fortunately, in the latest models of the Gitzo Mountainer, this problem has finally been solved by the manufacturer itself - the central column can be removed from the tripod without additional tools. Unless you are willing to sacrifice an extra 20cm of height.

tripod head for photo tripod

Serious tripods are sold most often without a tripod head. It is selected in the same way as a lens for a camera - different in different cases. The most versatile are ball heads. Moreover, if you are not a fan of any one brand, it is better to choose those heads that support the most widely used standard of Arca-Swiss quick release pads.

The trendsetters here are both the Arca-Swiss company itself and the companies Markins, Kirk, Wimberly, Really Right Staff and others. They produce a wide range of very high quality and expensive tripod heads.

Some of these heads (the same Arca-Swiss), although they are called ball heads, in fact they are not. And they basically contain not a ball, but something slightly ovoid. When turning from a vertical position in any direction, the resistance of the head to turn gradually increases. This is done so that when the camera is loosened, it does not “peck down” and does not fall to the ground along with the tripod.

A lightweight ball head for a traveling photographer is something with a ball diameter in the region of 25 - 40mm. Weight is obtained in the region of 200 - 500g. Do not forget a separate platform (s) for existing equipment.

It is advisable to choose platforms that are installed on cameras and lenses that comply with the Arca-Swiss standard according to your camera (lens) model. Unlike universal platforms, specialized ones “sit” much more reliably and densely.

If the price for the products of the “first echelon” companies seems a little overpriced, there is always the opportunity to choose something from Korean or Chinese analogues. Just don’t hope that you will get “Gitzo for a third of the price” :-)

When using a tripod, use the self-timer or remote shutter to reduce vibration. For SLR cameras, it is better to use mirror pre-lift to reduce vibration.

In the event that you cannot imagine your life without shooting panoramas, you should pay attention to a lightweight panoramic head.

Unfortunately, the major brands of lightweight, "wearable" panoramic heads do not. And they produce something monstrous and very expensive.

Unlike small specialized companies.

For example, with such a nodal head, you can make multi-row panoramas and 360-degree VR panoramas that are in vogue. In Moscow, she, after ordering on the site

tripod head for video tripod

What only wonderful video heads are not produced by respected manufacturers. They are hydraulic, and with compensation for the weight of the camera, and with the ability to make panoramas along two axes at once. But their weight...

One of the lightweight aluminum video heads with hydraulics on both axes - Manfrotto 503HDV has a weight of about 2 kg. Obviously not an option.

Remain, as in the case of tripods, heads made of composite materials.

For example Manfrotto 701RC2 - 0.8kg.

Or Gitzo G2180 - 0.6kg.

You won't get the special smoothness and balance inherent in "adult" video heads with these models, but this is a price to pay for weight reduction.

And yet - video heads can be successfully used for attaching photographic equipment to them. Stock up on removable pads so as not to twist from camcorder to camera.

But the opposite is not true - it makes no sense to put a video camera on the photo head.

I bought my previous tripod based on the “weight / brand / average price” ratio, and it suited me with everything, except for shooting in medium and strong winds - because of its lightness, it vibrated, and even a suspension in the form of a heavy bag with lenses did not save . And in December, when returning from Thailand, one of the stupors of the central column broke in the suitcase and it began to spontaneously fall from time to time. A couple of months later, already in Kamchatka, in the cold, one of the clip-locks on the leg burst. As a result, and so not high (140 cm), the tripod was shortened by one knee. So I faced the choice of a new tripod.

Having already practical experience, I spent several days looking for a suitable model. This time the requirements were: design reliability/brand trust/extended functionality. In the end, I chose the Manfrotto 190Go! by Manfrotto in carbon alloy with a height range of 8-170 cm, weight 2 kg, coupler locks and a 90-degree folding center column.

The chip with the column generally bribed. This feature allows you to stabilize macro shots, take smooth panoramas, and also look where you would not venture yourself?.

In general, when choosing a tripod, you should pay attention to the following parameters:
1. Weight
2. Compactness
3. Height and its range
4. Leg clip type
5. Tripod head type
6. Material
7. Manufacturer

I will talk about each of them in the next post.

So, what to look for when choosing a tripod for your camera:
1.Weight. You always want to buy lighter, but this is a gross mistake. Already with an average wind, a light tripod begins to vibrate, and the quality of the images suffer. Of course, there is always a fear that the harder it is, the more discomfort. In fact, weight is a matter of habit. After two days, you do not notice the difference that the tripod weighs 2 kg, instead of 1.5.

2.Compactness (length when folded). For travel, this is an important parameter. At least focus on the size of your suitcase ?. Also pay attention to the ability to attach it to your photo backpack. Usually 4-leg tripods take up less space, and the model I chose is just that. When folded, it takes 57 cm, but this is not the limit - Manfrotto has 4-knee models and shorter. For example, my tripod is easy to mount and carry on a compact photo backpack.

3.Height. There are pocket tripods, up to 10 cm high, but their working range is very limited. Mainly suitable for shooting in the city, where there are many elements of the architectural environment that can be used as a stand. Yes, and they are designed for smartphones and compact cameras. The most common height is 140-150 cm. But the most functional ones are even higher (for example, my 170 cm) help to freely shoot from any viewing platform with a high barrier, and allow you to “rise” above the crowd, finding literally a small hill.

You should also pay attention to the entire range of heights - what is the minimum height a tripod can provide.

The minimum height is provided by how wide the legs can move apart and the ability to tilt the center column by 90 degrees. Usually, you can only spread the legs wide on professional tripods. In the bulk, the divergence of the legs is rigidly fixed to the central column of the tripod by spacers. (In my model, all three legs are autonomous and move apart in a wide range, literally to the “twine”, and the tilt of the central column, by 90 degrees, completely “eats up” the entire height, making the tripod only 8 cm high!).

4. The most common tripod knee locks are clamp locks. But, as my practice has shown, the plastic from which they are made may not withstand even minus 10. Therefore, this time, I chose coupling ones. They are metal, and they can be opened / closed on each leg all at once, simply by clasping the palm of your hand and turning.
5. Tripod head. On cheap and pocket versions, it is absent, and the level of camera tilt is regulated by changing the length and / or inclination of the legs. Advanced tripods have a 3D head, where there are three adjustment knobs responsible for the tilt in each of the three planes, or a swivel head that has a wide range of rotation, thanks to its
spherical shape. All good tripod heads are also equipped with a bubble level - a transparent capsule with water and an air bubble showing how evenly it is fixed. By the way, professional tripods and heads are often sold separately so that the buyer himself can choose the desired configuration.

6. Material. The most common material is aluminum. Chinese tripods are made of very thin aluminum and cheap plastic. They are seductively light, but not practical - they vibrate in the wind, and the locks and knees do not provide a good fixation. Brand tripods made of aluminum and plastic are much better. However, the optimal weight / reliability ratio is provided by expensive materials carbon (carbon fiber), titanium or magnesium. But this also affects the price.
7. I prefer well-known brands responsible for their products. The leading manufacturer of tripods is the Italian company Manfrotto, which produces simply the widest range of such equipment.
8. Additional functionality
This includes legs that change the angle of inclination and a central column that folds 90 degrees.

These are connectors for additional accessories. For example, on mine there is a socket where you can attach additional
